smart

The Materials Science and Engineering (SGM) department of the Nîmes IUT was present at the Journées académiques de l'aéronautique, held on April 3 and 4, 2025 at Montpellier-Pérols.

On site, teachers and students welcomed a large number of middle and high school students, who had come to find out more about aviation-related professions. It was an opportunity for them to discover an often little-known but essential aspect: the central role played by materials in aircraft design, performance and maintenance.

The leading example? The Airbus A350, where over 50% of components are made from composite materials, combining lightness, strength and performance. A revolution for the aeronautics sector... and an opportunity for future technicians and engineers trained in Nîmes!

The Occitanie region is a key player in the aeronautical industry, with a dynamic ecosystem around the Nîmes-Garons and Montpellier airports, combining specialized training (maintenance, piloting, engineering) and cutting-edge companies such as Aero Composite Service, Sabena Technics and the Groupement d'hélicoptères de la Sécurité Civile.

Nîmes' BUT SGM prepares students to design, manufacture and repair aeronautical parts. Thanks to courses rooted in industrial reality and supervised by experienced professionals, students acquire solid skills in regulations, manufacturing techniques and materials quality.
