The Department of Materials Science and Engineering (SGM) at the Nîmes University Institute of Technology (IUT) attended the Academic Days of Aeronautics, held on April 3 and 4, 2025, in Montpellier-Pérols.

On site, faculty and students welcomed many middle and high school students who had come to learn about careers in aviation. It was an opportunity to introduce them to an often-overlooked but essential aspect: the central role of materials in aircraft design, performance, and maintenance.

The prime example? The Airbus A350, more than 50% of whose components are made of composite materials, combining lightness, strength, and performance. A revolution for the aerospace industry… and an opportunity for future technicians and engineers trained in Nîmes!

The Occitanie region is a key hub for the aerospace industry, boasting a dynamic ecosystem centered around the Nîmes-Garons and Montpellier airport areas, which combines specialized training programs (maintenance, flight training, engineering) with cutting-edge companies such as Aero Composite Service, Sabena Technics, and the Civil Security Helicopter Group.

The BUT SGM program in Nîmes prepares students to design, manufacture, and repair aerospace components. Through courses grounded in real-world industry experience and led by experienced professionals, students develop strong skills in regulations, manufacturing techniques, and materials quality.
